National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level
The NPEGEL (National Programme for providing education of Girls at Elementary Level), launched by the Indian Government during July 2003, aims at providing education to the girls who are residing in the most remote areas of India. This initiative has the full support of SSA and provides funding for educational opportunities over and above the basic support that is already provided by the SSA. In this initiative, every cluster gets a model school and the applications of girls in schools are monitored properly. This programme also takes care of providing escorts, stationery and uniform to girls, introducing them to gender –sensitive teaching faculty and books talking about gender sensitivity.
These are the following areas where this programme has gained inroads:
- EBBs (Educationally Backward Blocks) – Any area where the literacy level of women is far below the national average and where the gender gap is far more than the national average are classified as EBB.
- Districts that have a minimum of 5% of Scheduled Cast or Scheduled Tribe people and where women in this sect have a literacy level of less than 10% are covered in this scheme.
- Certain slums identified in urban area are also included as beneficiaries in this scheme.
